More on Mobile Phone Payments

I was interested to read this article today http://www.finextra.com/fullstory.asp?id=16581 about Citi and Obopay.  I checked out https://www.obopay.com/ and I like what they are doing.

It’s an interesting step forward and has the advantage of using current technology.

However, it doesn’t meet my requirement of being able to throw my wallet in the bin as there is still reliance on a plastic card to bridge the gap between modern technology and last century’s.

Does anybody know of anything more radical taking place?  Is there any collusion between the mobile phone manufacturers, the banks and the payment processing houses?

Why can’t we have a means of making credit/debit card transactions “card free” by mobile phone, whilst at the same time having a small payments (proximity based) system, all of which connected to my bank account so I can top up funds, check my balances and make transfers direct or via various payment mechanisms???
